The former Frigstad Kristiansand, now Bluewhale II, nears delivery and is currently on sea trials. The 7th generation Frigstad D90 design 12,000ft wd rated semi is now owned by CIMC Bluewhale Rig Ltd and is set for delivery at the end of this month. No charter has yet been announced for the rig. The Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS), of the Geological Survey Administration under the Ministry of Land & Resources (MLR) have pulled the plug on their gas hydrate deepwater drilling program in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea stating they had achieved their objectives with just the first well of the campaign which was always to be intended for research purposes. One rig that has been completed, delivered and accepted by the owner, a rare event these days, is Sinopec’s Jing Lue, a 300ft rated Shengli Drilling Technology design jack-up built at CIMC Raffles shipyard. The rig has been handed over to Sinopec subsidiary Shengli Petroleum Engineering and is ex-pected to go to work for Sinopec offshore China shortly.
COSL UDW semi Hai Yang Shi You 981 has completed its 5-year SPS and has departed CIMC Raffles shipyard and headed to the South China Sea, near Hainan Island, for a new charter with CNOOC will will go through November this year. The rig has been in the shipyard since September last year.
CIMC shipyard in China have announced that the second Frigstad D90 UDW harsh environment semi Bluewhale 2 is scheduled for completion by the end of August . The original delivery date at time of ordering by Frigstad was Q2 2016. CIMC state that they are in discussions regarding specific use of the rig but have yet to have any charter agreed.
CIMC Raffles shipyard in Yantai China have announced the successful completion of the inclining test for new build jackup Jing Lue. The rig, designed by Shengli Drilling Technology, was ordered by Sinopec in 2014 and is expected to be delivered later this year and will be operated by Shengli Petrole-um Engineering Co. It is rated for 90m water depths.
The former Frigstad UDW semi Frigstad Kristiansand, now the Bluewhale 2, is set for delivery in the second half of this year and is being set up to drill both combustible ice and oil. This follows the recent successful collection of methane gas trapped in ice like crystals by sister rig Bluewhale 1 while drilling in the South China Sea. The rig is under construction at China’s Yantai CIMC Raffles shipyard and is set to be used to carry out further drilling for methane gas after it becomes operational.
